Role Overview:

The Indigenous Workforce Specialist plays a vital role in advancing the City’s commitment to fostering a thriving community for all. This position is dedicated to creating and executing initiatives that align with the TRC Call to Action #92, focusing on the employment of Indigenous individuals within the City of Saskatoon. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, designing, and implementing strategies aimed at enhancing recruitment, advancement, and career development opportunities for Indigenous individuals.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders to pinpoint challenges, opportunities, and methods to attract, hire, and retain Indigenous talent.
  • Tracking, analyzing, and reporting on organizational metrics to assess progress and provide insights towards achieving Indigenous employment objectives across all levels.
  • Partnering with internal leadership to evaluate and suggest modifications to human resources strategies, policies, and programs that support Indigenous employment.
  • Establishing and nurturing a robust outreach network to promote Indigenous employment.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven Trustworthiness and Integrity: Ability to cultivate and sustain effective relationships with key stakeholders in the Indigenous community, as well as with City leaders and employees.
  • Strong Project Management Skills: Proficiency in planning, organizing, and problem-solving to identify gaps and implement effective programs.
  • Experience as a Change Agent: Capability to navigate and facilitate initiatives that may lead to organizational change.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Ability to articulate ideas and concepts clearly, both verbally and in writing, including formal presentations.
  • Political Insight: Skill in maneuvering through complex governmental and organizational dynamics to achieve desired outcomes.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates typically have:

  • A degree in commerce, business administration, Indigenous Studies, or a related discipline.
  • Four to six years of relevant experience in human resources, particularly in initiatives that support the employment of Indigenous individuals.
  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous cultures, political structures, histories, and lived experiences.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the governance of Indigenous communities.
  • Familiarity with human rights, occupational health and safety, and labor legislation, along with experience in unionized environments.
