Fire Safety Specialist

Halifax Regional Municipality is seeking a highly skilled Plans Examination Specialist to join our team in Fire Prevention with Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE).
The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting complex construction documents, including review of fire protection systems, alternate solutions, occupant loads, emergency responder access, water supply, fire and life safety code compliance, and firefighter safety.
Key Responsibilities:- Review building plans and property development proposals to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and by-laws.
- Attend and/or arrange for final inspections of new buildings to support transition to occupancy and HRFE's jurisdiction.
- Develop and maintain educational material, procedures, and templates to communicate to building owners their responsibilities under the Fire Safety Act.
- Provide technical advice and direction to architects, engineers, contractors, HRM staff, external agencies, and the public.
- Research alternate products, materials, and methods of construction for compliance and make recommendations.
- Recommend changes in code to resolve interpretation problems and accommodate new methods and materials.
- Coordinate with operations staff regarding fire and life safety issues.
- Maintain plan review data status on computer and update status as necessary.
- Maintain plan review records and files.
- Participate in various groups as a committee member and attend meetings relating to plan review, building safety, fire and life safety, and construction.
- Review and coordinate the development of operational policies and guidelines and recommend changes or additions as necessary.
- Level 2 Building Official Diploma of Qualification and ability to obtain Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification.
- Minimum ten (10) years' relevant experience administering the Fire Safety Act and Regulations, Building Code Act and Regulations, and/or related legislation.
- Considerable experience reviewing complex building plans, such as high-rise and industrial buildings, is an asset.
- Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.
