Job Overview

The University of British Columbia Facilities offers extensive maintenance, operational, and renovation services for properties owned by the institution.

Graphic Signage Specialists execute proficient sign creation and graphic design tasks, focusing on updating, maintaining, and installing new signage and specialized graphics for both permanent and temporary displays across the campus.

Organizational Structure

Graphic Signage Specialists report directly to the Project Supervisor within the Construction Office. They collaborate independently as well as with associated laborers and tradespeople, including apprentices and journeypersons.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procures materials and equipment necessary for assigned tasks.
  • Creates signs and graphics utilizing advanced computerized sign-making software alongside various machinery such as Vision CNC Router/Engraver, Epilog Laser Engraver/Cutter, Roland TrueVIS Large Format Printer/Cutter, and Graphtec Vinyl Cutter and Plotter.
  • Renovates existing signage and fabricates and installs new signage.
  • As needed, prepares estimates and generates inspection reports.

Impact of Decisions

Determines the workflow, methodologies, and equipment to be utilized, ensuring the completion of tasks based on technical expertise and departmental guidelines; poor decisions may lead to minor service interruptions or additional costs.

Supervision and Guidance

Operates under general supervision, following both oral and written directives in accordance with established procedures.

Essential Qualifications

Completion of formal training in Signwriting, possession of a valid and current relevant trades qualification or a diploma from BCIT's Graphic Communications Course or equivalent, a valid BC driver's license, and a minimum of five years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
