About Us

The Government of Nova Scotia is dedicated to safeguarding the environment, human health, and animal welfare through effective regulation, conservation efforts, partnerships, and advocacy. Our mission is to formulate legislation, regulations, and policies, while processing notifications, applications, and approvals for regulated activities grounded in robust scientific knowledge and expertise.

Our objective is to educate, inspect, and enforce compliance with relevant legislation and regulations. We proactively address environmental, conservation, animal, and human health risks, developing programs and delivering services to enhance protection in these critical areas.

About Our Opportunity

In this role, reporting to the Manager of Protected Areas Operations, you will play a vital part in advancing priority initiatives within the protected areas program, specifically focusing on Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Primary Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include leading the design, assessment, and execution of GIS projects that pertain to the planning and management of protected areas. This role requires collaboration within a team setting, gathering and synthesizing information from colleagues to produce functional outputs. You will be tasked with creating technical documentation and manuals related to various projects and workflows.

Timely responses to requests for maps, data analysis, and additional GIS support will be essential. You will prioritize these requests and ensure responses are delivered promptly. Additionally, you will compile, edit, and maintain data within geographic and operational databases, providing summaries and analyses as needed.

Support for GIS and non-GIS personnel in the development and enhancement of ArcGIS Online applications will also be part of your duties. Familiarity with Field Maps and other ESRI software will be beneficial.

Collaboration with staff from this department and potentially other provincial departments will be required. You may also engage with industry partners, non-governmental organizations, community groups, and conservation and recreation entities to further departmental objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

To excel in this position, you should possess a diploma in GIS along with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Management, Ecology, Land Conservation, Planning, or a related field within natural resource management.

Advanced proficiency and experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), particularly ArcPro, are essential. Strong analytical, cartographic, data management, and problem-solving abilities are required. Experience in creating interactive maps and developing applications in ArcGIS Online is also necessary, along with the ability to produce technical reports and manuals.

Additional assets include experience in database design, spatial analysis, LiDAR, Model Builder, Python, and Arcade programming. Familiarity with other ESRI software such as Experience Builder, Field Maps, Survey 1,2,3, and StoryMaps will be advantageous. Knowledge of conservation planning is also beneficial.

Experience in land conservation or protected areas, along with a practical understanding of current issues and best practices in protected areas planning and management, will be considered assets. Familiarity with the Nova Scotia Protected Areas Program is also a plus.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You should be self-motivated, possess strong organizational skills, and demonstrate meticulous attention to detail. Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software is required, along with the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively.

Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal legislation, regulations, policies, programs, and processes concerning protected areas, private land conservation, and land management in Nova Scotia will be advantageous.

Equivalency

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Benefits

The Government of Nova Scotia offers a comprehensive range of benefits, including a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General Illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation, and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.

Working Conditions

Willingness to travel throughout Nova Scotia and work irregular hours when necessary is required.
