Stationary Engineer

About the Role
The 3rd Class Stationary Engineer is a key member of our team at BGIS, responsible for performing operational work in central heating and cooling plants in the National Capital Area. Reporting to the 1st Class Stationary Engineer, this role requires a strong understanding of mechanical equipment and systems, as well as excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Experience with the operating characteristics of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment, including computer systems.
- Knowledge of testing methods to carry out tests on mechanical equipment and water samples, ensuring the reliability of plant equipment and determining chemical concentrations in water.
- Skills to start up and shut down large oil and gas fired boilers and generators, adjust controls that regulate output, perform preventive maintenance, and remove and replace parts.
- Troubleshooting activities demand analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Working with a variety of computer software programs.
- Conducting standardized tests to determine chemical concentrations in water.
- Using a variety of hand and power tools in the work.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of experience at the Class 3 level.
- Significant knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems, including a familiarity with the operating characteristics of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment, including computer systems.
- General knowledge of federal and provincial regulations related to environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations.
- Knowledge of administrative practices to prepare work orders and documents, compile operational data for monthly reports to management, and write reports with recommendations.
- Manual dexterity to repair and overhaul operating plant and extensive distribution systems equipment, pumps, valves, expansion joints, and fans.
- Written communication skill to record information in a written shift log and prepare reports, complete various forms, time sheets, travel claims, and procurement documents.
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
- 3rd class Stationary Engineer certification.
