POSITION OVERVIEW
The 3rd Class Stationary Engineer is responsible for executing operational tasks within a central heating and cooling facility in the National Capital Area, reporting directly to the 1st Class Stationary Engineer. The role involves providing essential services to federal government entities at various facilities within the National Capital Region. BGIS is dedicated to delivering certified and skilled Operating Engineers to oversee, operate, and maintain diverse registered heating and cooling systems.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proficient in the operational characteristics of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment, including computer systems.
- Knowledgeable in testing methodologies to conduct assessments on mechanical equipment and water samples, ensuring reliability and appropriate chemical concentrations.
- Capable of starting up and shutting down large oil and gas-fired boilers and generators, adjusting controls for optimal output, performing preventive maintenance, and occasionally replacing parts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting mechanical issues.
- Familiarity with various computer software applications relevant to the role.
- Skilled in conducting standardized tests to ascertain chemical concentrations in water.
- Proficient in using a range of hand and power tools for maintenance tasks.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- 3-5 years of experience at the Class 3 level.
- In-depth understanding of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems, including familiarity with operational characteristics necessary for maintaining safe and continuous temperature control.
- General awareness of federal and provincial regulations concerning environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations.
- Administrative skills for preparing work orders, compiling operational data for reports, and drafting recommendations.
- Manual dexterity for repairing and overhauling plant equipment and extensive distribution systems.
- Proficient written communication skills for maintaining shift logs and preparing various reports and documentation.
- Effective verbal communication skills for discussing mechanical issues with colleagues.
Certifications
- Valid 3rd Class Stationary Engineer certification.
