McMaster Children's Hospital, situated in Hamilton's west-end, ranks as the second largest pediatric hospital in Canada. We host the fastest-growing emergency department dedicated solely to children in Ontario, along with one of the nation's most sophisticated neonatal intensive care units, and a variety of specialized programs and clinics focusing on areas such as pediatric oncology, gastrointestinal disorders, and mental health.

Position Overview

The Ophthalmology Clinic delivers swift and specialized ophthalmic care to pediatric and subspecialty neonatal patients within McMaster Children's Hospital. The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for conducting assessments on neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients, assisting multiple ophthalmologists and orthoptists. This role involves performing independent evaluations for various vision tests and ensuring the proper supervision and upkeep of ophthalmic equipment.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday; daytime hours. Evening and weekend shifts may be necessary.

Qualifications

  • Ophthalmic Technician Certificate from an accredited institution
  • Preferred certification from the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology office or hospital setting as an Ophthalmic Technician or Orthoptist is preferred
  • Experience working with pediatric patients is preferred
  • Proficiency with equipment such as Humphrey Visual Field, OCT Fundus photography, ERG, VEP, Pachymeter, I-care, and Auto Refractor
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Knowledge in assisting physicians with vision assessments, pressure measurements, patient history, and lens neutralization
  • Familiarity with medical terminology
  • Ability to educate patients effectively
  • Capability to assist in minor ocular procedures
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and equipment
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills within a multidisciplinary team
  • Effective problem-solving abilities
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to safety protocols
