Role Overview

As a pivotal member of the maternity care team, you will oversee nursing staff and support personnel, ensuring adherence to clinical standards and fostering a culture of professional practice. Your leadership will be instrumental in guiding staff development, enhancing their competencies, and serving as a critical resource during high-stakes situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise nursing and support staff, promoting adherence to clinical standards through effective modeling and dialogue.
  • Facilitate coordination of activities within the unit by collaborating with charge nurses and primary care providers, ensuring optimal patient flow and bed allocation.
  • Monitor and manage hospital resource utilization through regular unit rounds, adjusting staffing levels based on patient care demands.
  • Address patient care challenges using the nursing process, collaborating with physicians and families to uphold quality care standards.
  • Ensure the availability and maintenance of necessary equipment, conducting regular safety inspections and reporting deficiencies.
  • Uphold a safe environment for patients and staff by adhering to established safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of patient care standards and policies in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives, including incident follow-ups and data collection related to patient and staff events.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with current RN registration from the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • A minimum of five years of recent experience in perinatal care, including at least one year in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Current certifications in CPR and NRP.
  • Certification in Fetal Health Assessment (BCWH or equivalent).

  • Knowledge of emergencies related to antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
  • Commitment to understanding and addressing the legislative obligations and commitments to Indigenous Peoples in healthcare.
