Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the performance of nursing staff and support personnel. Uphold professional and clinical nursing standards by exemplifying best practices, fostering discussions about care practices, and assessing practice to identify educational needs. Provide instruction, mentorship, and support to staff as they enhance their expertise and serve as a resource during critical situations.
  • Serve as a liaison to facilitate coordination of activities within the unit by collaborating with charge nurses and primary care providers as necessary. Assist in patient bed assignments for both direct and emergency admissions.
  • Supervise hospital resource utilization by conducting regular unit rounds to monitor program activities. Adjust staffing levels based on workload and resource needs by reallocating or calling in staff as required.
  • Address patient care challenges using the nursing process to ensure high-quality care. Collaborate with physicians, families, and various departments regarding nursing practices and hospital policies.
  • Ensure the availability of necessary equipment for the program. Conduct monthly safety inspections and initiate maintenance requests as needed. Report any deficiencies to the appropriate management.
  • Maintain a secure environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to established emergency protocols and safety practices.
  • Contribute to the AP/PP/Birthing Leadership Team in the formulation, execution, and assessment of the program's patient care standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives by promptly following up on incidents involving staff or patients, gathering data, and ensuring the completion of incident reports as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with current registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • A minimum of five (5) years of recent experience in perinatal care, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current CPR and NRP certifications.
  • Certification in Fetal Health Assessment (BCWH or equivalent).

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead and make independent decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and achieve objectives.
  • Proficient in conflict resolution and problem-solving.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Excellent skills in team collaboration.
  • Ability to mentor staff during critical situations.
  • Knowledge of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum emergencies.
  • Commitment to understanding legislative obligations and provincial commitments related to Indigenous Peoples and their health care rights.
  • Strong asset: Knowledge of the socio-economic and historical contexts affecting Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with anti-racism and cultural safety practices.
