Position Overview

The Strategy & Decision Support (SDS) team plays a pivotal role in equipping the University of British Columbia (UBC) Executive, Faculty Leaders, and Business Unit Heads with essential strategic insights and capabilities. This enables UBC to pinpoint and capitalize on significant opportunities while addressing the critical challenges that influence the University's ongoing and future success.

In collaboration with various UBC stakeholders, SDS offers a comprehensive range of in-house advisory services aimed at strategy formulation, financial viability, and operational efficiency.

SDS focuses on targeted initiatives to resolve strategic inquiries, uncover solutions to intricate challenges, and deliver guidance on navigating complex issues. Every project undertaken by SDS is designed to have a substantial impact on UBC and aligns with the overarching direction set by the University Executive.

The Senior Consultant, Strategy and Decision Support is tasked with overseeing and directing strategic initiatives across all SDS service areas, including business strategy formulation, strategic planning, financial assessment, and operational efficiency, all of which are critical for informed decision-making within the University’s extensive budget framework. This role demands significant expertise and a proven track record in managing and leading strategic planning within a multifaceted stakeholder landscape, encompassing facilitation, consensus-building, synthesis of strategic insights, project management, and the development of cohesive strategic plans.

Organizational Context
This position reports to the Associate Director of Strategy & Decision Support and frequently collaborates with other managers and directors across the University on a project basis, under the guidance of the SDS Director, Associate Director, or Managers. The role is office-based, often requiring adaptability to meet tight deadlines across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Decision Support

  • Oversee strategic planning projects within a multi-stakeholder context, ensuring effective facilitation, consensus-building, and project management.
  • Manage complex projects across all SDS service offerings, including:
  • Developing comprehensive project plans outlining objectives, scope, approach, budget, schedule, and performance metrics.
  • Implementing project plans within established timelines and budgets.
  • Formulating strategic insights and providing advisory support to achieve project goals.
  • Leading client-facing meetings, interviews, and focus group discussions.
  • Creating project reports and presentations as necessary.
  • Directing strategic projects across diverse University portfolios, supporting both Academic and Administrative initiatives.
  • Collaborating closely with Senior Leadership and department heads on sensitive projects, addressing complex issues critical to the University’s strategic and operational success.
  • Conducting multi-source research to foster innovative solutions.
  • Testing and reconciling data quality across various sources.
  • Distilling research findings into actionable insights.
  • Contributing to the development of analytical models and financial models for strategic initiatives.
  • Developing tools and reports for Senior Leadership to monitor departmental financial health and resource allocation.
  • Providing strategic advice on financial resource utilization aligned with organizational goals.
  • Assisting in the preparation of annual financial budgets and business plans.
  • Conducting ad-hoc analytical reporting and forecasting.

Business Process Improvement and Operational Efficiency

  • Partner with various University departments to ensure operational effectiveness and alignment with strategic objectives through thorough analysis of business processes and performance metrics.
  • Engage stakeholders to identify business needs and improvement opportunities.
  • Define key metrics necessary for strategic decision-making across UBC.
  • Evaluate organizational metrics against strategic objectives and recommend adjustments for enhanced performance monitoring.
  • Facilitate collaboration among organizations to streamline operations and improve effectiveness.

Project Management

  • Plan, manage, and structure project work while guiding project team members.
  • Develop project plans encompassing scope, approach, budget, and performance measures.
  • Ensure project implementation adheres to established scope, timeline, and budget.
  • Facilitate workshops and interviews, gathering documentation and liaising with client staff.
  • Oversee work conducted by consultants and subcontractors.
  • Lead consulting projects that consistently meet or exceed client expectations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the functions and procedures of various University units.
  • Stay informed on University priorities and present final deliverables to senior roles.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Represent SDS on relevant committees to advance University goals.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant field and completion of the CPA accounting program (CA, CGA, or CMA) is required, along with a minimum of seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
  • Experience in strategic planning, financial modeling, and business process improvement is advantageous.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Expertise in strategic planning and business strategy.
  • Strong facilitation and consensus-building skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial concepts and analytical tools.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, particularly Excel and data analysis tools.
  • Exceptional communication, report writing, and organizational skills.
