Position Summary
The Engineering Design Assistant plays a vital role within our team, focusing on the evaluation, processing, and design of permits related to commercial and residential sewer and water connections. This position also involves providing essential support to applicants throughout the permitting process.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the intake, assessment, design, and issuance of sewer and water connection permits.
- Conduct engineering calculations, develop preliminary designs, and propose installation solutions for service connection projects.
- Analyze CCTV and inspection records to inform design and installation of new and existing service connections.
- Coordinate survey activities for the construction layout of connection installations.
- Collaborate with Sewer Operations to provide cost estimates for public sewer connections servicing commercial developments.
- Offer guidance to applicants, consultants, and contractors regarding servicing requirements for various developments.
- Research and disseminate technical information about sewer and water infrastructure to the public.
- Address general inquiries related to sewer servicing from the public and external agencies.
- Provide technical assistance to other departments regarding service connection installations.
- Adhere to existing policies, procedures, and regulations concerning sewer and water permits and connections.
- Maintain accurate records and files, and perform additional technical duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Completion of a technical program in applied sciences, along with significant relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in municipal infrastructure and construction is essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of civil, mechanical, and piping drafting techniques.
- Proficient in engineering mathematics and familiar with engineering practices.
- Understanding of standard engineering terminology.
- Knowledge of surveying methods and practical field experience.
- Familiarity with municipal design principles, inspection procedures, and construction methodologies.
- Experience with City computer systems such as ePlan, POSSE, Hansen, Topobase, Word, and Excel.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D is an asset.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Capability to interpret engineering drawings and perform design drafting.
- Competence in conducting complex technical and mathematical computations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting with minimal supervision.
- Skill in providing accurate information to the public.
- Capacity to evaluate work methods and suggest improvements.
