We are currently seeking a permanent part-time Community Support Worker in the Airdrie area, with a commitment of 20 hours per week.

Program Overview
The Calgary Alternative Residential Services (CARS) program is designed to assist individuals with developmental disabilities in achieving greater independence through skill development, empowerment, and full societal inclusion, thereby enhancing their quality of life. The CARS program emphasizes 'person-centered planning' – a model where individuals support one another based on their unique needs. Through a self-directed approach, individuals will be guided in identifying support areas that are significant to them and that will help them reach their personal aspirations.

Position Overview
The Community Support Worker (CSW) plays a crucial role in the services provided by Calgary Alternative Support Services Inc. (CASS). This position empowers clients to cultivate a strong sense of agency, enabling them to make positive choices and integrate into their communities while ensuring stability in their daily routines. The CSW is responsible for establishing professional boundaries with clients, offering guidance on emotional support, daily living skills, and connecting with community resources as outlined in their Individual Support Plan (ISP).

Key Responsibilities:
Client Focused:

  • Establish and maintain respectful and professional boundaries while fostering positive relationships with clients;
  • Assist clients in developing and tracking goals and objectives as directed by the Coordinator;
  • Support individuals in identified areas to promote independent living or enhance community involvement, including daily living skills, community engagement, recreational activities, and health management as guided by the client coordinator;
  • Build and sustain a constructive professional relationship with client guardians and other support networks as necessary.
Agency Responsibilities:
  • Comprehend and comply with CASS Policies & Procedures and program-specific expectations as outlined in operational manuals;
  • Check email communications at the start of each shift;
Documentation:
  • Complete client and agency-specific paperwork promptly, including:
  • Monthly timesheets
  • Monthly expense reports
  • Hazard Reports
  • Staff Incident & Near Miss Reports
  • Client Incident Reports
  • Actively engage in the CASS Health & Safety program and adhere to Health & Safety policies in accordance with CASS procedures and Alberta OHS legislation;
  • Maintain valid certification in all core training and any additional training as required based on client support needs.
Organizational Culture:
  • Exemplify and embody CASS values in all interactions with clients, staff, and community members;
  • Show respect and collaboration with all internal and external stakeholders of the CASS organization;
  • Exhibit the ability and willingness to provide and receive constructive feedback.
Key Relationships & Stakeholders:
Client: Individuals receiving support through CASS, with an obligation to provide focused and positive assistance aligned with their needs and goals while ensuring their safety.
Community Support Coordinators: Responsible for service development, staffing oversight, and maintaining high-quality services for clients, including the creation of Individual Service Plans, Risk Assessments, and Behavioral Support Plans with a focus on person-centered planning and strength-based objectives.
Guardians: Individuals appointed by the Court to protect vulnerable adults, offering a range of decision-making options from supported decision-making to full guardianship.
Support Network: Comprising personal and professional individuals engaged with the client to provide support.
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Positive approach to various situations;
  • Adaptability in communication styles;
  • Patience;
  • Preferred knowledge in supporting adults with developmental disabilities.
Required Education:
  • Post-secondary education in Human Services;
  • Current Emergency or Standard First Aid certification including CPR/AED;
  • A satisfactory police information check with a vulnerable sectors search.
Additional Requirements:
  • A vehicle and valid driver's license are mandatory;
  • Willingness to transport clients in your vehicle.
