Course Title and Code: MSE498Y1 Y: Capstone Project: Design of Materials Processes

Course Overview: In this course, students will collaborate in small teams to undertake a project focused on the design of a materials processing facility. The culmination of their efforts will be a comprehensive design report presented at the end of the course. Key topics addressed during lectures and throughout the design process will include:

  • Fundamental materials processing flowsheets for both primary processing and recycling
  • Materials and energy balance for individual units and overall process flowsheets
  • Utilization of software tools for flowsheet evaluation
  • Translating process flowsheets into resource and utility requirements
  • Energy analysis and cost estimation (capital and operating)
  • Basic equipment sizing and operational scheduling
  • Safety protocols and HAZOP analysis
  • Plant layout considerations and sustainable design practices

Estimated Enrollment: 45 students

Teaching Assistant Support: Approximately 120 hours

Class Schedule: To be determined

Appointment Duration: Fall-Winter Session

Compensation: For a 50% appointment, the minimum pay is $9 for Sessional Lecturer I and $10 for Sessional Lecturer II, with potential increases based on the candidate's experience and qualifications.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline is required. Prior experience in lecturing or laboratory coordination at the university level is preferred.

Responsibilities: The Department of Materials Science and Engineering seeks a qualified lecturer to deliver MSE 498H1 F - Capstone Project during the Fall-Winter semester. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and delivering lectures
  • Overseeing the setting, supervision, and grading of examinations
  • Assigning final course grades and conducting course evaluations

This position is governed by the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
