Position Overview

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as an Indigenous Cultural Practitioner

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking an Indigenous Cultural Practitioner to be part of the Indigenous Health Support team. This role is vital in fostering connections and promoting wellness within Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities

Operate within a framework that emphasizes person, family, and community-centered care, ensuring trauma-informed and culturally safe practices while honoring the values and histories of Indigenous Peoples and Nations in Canada. Play a pivotal role in supporting a comprehensive traditional wellness initiative in the community, collaborating with VCH clinicians across various health services to integrate traditional practices into care strategies for Indigenous clients. Engage in outreach efforts, providing culturally competent interventions for Indigenous individuals facing homelessness and complex health challenges, all within community environments. Deliver culturally sensitive services to Indigenous clients dealing with multifaceted psycho-social issues, including chronic health problems, intergenerational trauma, mental health concerns, and housing instability. Provide direct care, utilizing strength-based and trauma-informed approaches in collaboration with clients to enhance their care plans and facilitate effective discharge planning. Foster community relationships, offering consultation to VCH clinicians, participating in ongoing team development, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing client care.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience, with a minimum of two years working with Indigenous communities, particularly in providing cultural support. Familiarity with the health authority system, especially in relation to Indigenous health and wellness. Experience in coordinating and delivering traditional wellness practices within community settings. Preference will be given to candidates of Indigenous identity (First Nations, Inuit, Metis) as it directly relates to the skills and knowledge required for this role.

Knowledge & Skills

In-depth understanding of culturally safe care practices and completion of Indigenous Cultural Safety Training. Comprehensive knowledge of the histories and cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples. Awareness of systemic barriers faced by Indigenous individuals in accessing health care and the impact of colonialism on health outcomes. Ability to recognize and address mental health and substance use issues, applying trauma-informed principles in practice. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively engage with clients, families, and healthcare teams. Capacity to adapt to new challenges, problem-solve, and facilitate conflict resolution using restorative approaches. Basic computer skills for managing client care information and documentation.
