Toronto, Ontario, Canada Canonical Full time

Canonical is a prominent provider of open-source software and operating systems tailored for the global enterprise and technology sectors. Our platform, Ubuntu, is extensively utilized in groundbreaking enterprise initiatives, including public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Our clientele encompasses leading public cloud and silicon providers, along with industry frontrunners across various sectors. The company champions global distributed collaboration, boasting a workforce of over colleagues in more than 75 countries, with minimal office-based roles. Teams convene two to four times annually in engaging locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

As a founder-led, profitable, and expanding organization, we are seeking a MAAS Systems Engineer dedicated to enhancing data center operational efficiency. In this role, you will oversee the daily management and operations of our lab, focusing on Ubuntu server certification for US-based silicon and server designs. Your responsibilities will include developing and utilizing software for server and network switch deployment and configuration, as well as addressing complex design challenges to optimize performance at scale.

This position merges software engineering with a focus on reliable automated hardware commissioning and deployment, alongside testing, troubleshooting, and experimentation aimed at improving software reliability and performance. While expertise in all areas is not mandatory, a strong foundation in software engineering and a curiosity about complex distributed systems are essential for success. If you enjoy experimenting in your home lab, possess solid Python skills, and have an interest in data center hardware, this opportunity will be a great fit for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize your Python development expertise to enhance the Metal as a Service (MAAS) software, ensuring compatibility with a diverse range of server and network hardware.
  • Expand MAAS functionality by creating integrations with testing and scheduling tools, such as Testflinger.
  • Contribute to improvements and fixes within Testflinger.
  • Remotely manage a fully automated server lab featuring the latest server and network silicon from top vendors, ensuring availability for other teams.
  • Enhance hardware and network monitoring through automation.
  • Collaborate with fellow MAAS engineers, data center hardware specialists, and teams responsible for certifying hardware for Ubuntu.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, preferably in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • A strong desire to understand system behavior and a proactive approach to resolving issues.
  • Experience in Python programming.
  • Familiarity with Linux Administration.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • A collaborative spirit, able to work with a globally distributed team of passionate engineers.
  • An outstanding academic record from both high school and university.
  • Willingness to travel for internal events.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with both Rack and Virtual systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities.
  • A systematic approach to testing.
  • A passion for performance engineering.
  • Experience in data center operations.

What We Offer:

We take into account geographical location, experience, and performance when determining compensation globally. Our annual compensation reviews ensure recognition of outstanding performance, complemented by a performance-driven annual bonus. We provide all team members with additional benefits that reflect our values and ideals, balancing our programs to meet local needs while ensuring fairness worldwide.

  • A distributed work environment with biannual team sprints in person.
  • A personal learning and development budget.
  • Annual compensation reviews.
  • Recognition rewards.
  • Annual holiday leave.
  • Maternity and paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities to travel to new locations to connect with colleagues.
  • Travel upgrades for long-haul company events.
