This position is a remote opportunity, with expectations for regular visits to our lab.

If you have a passion for tinkering in your personal lab, possess strong Python skills, and have an interest in data center technology, this role is ideal for you.

As a Python Engineer in the MAAS QA Labs at Canonical, you will oversee the daily operations of our lab, which is utilized for Ubuntu server certification related to US-based silicon and server designs.

Your responsibilities will include developing and utilizing software for deploying and configuring servers and network switches, as well as addressing complex design challenges to ensure efficiency and scalability.


Your work will involve:

Engaging with cutting-edge silicon developed by the Kernel Team and Partner Engineering teams to optimize Linux performance, alongside established hardware to ensure seamless and efficient new Ubuntu releases.

This role blends software engineering focused on reliable automated hardware commissioning and deployment with testing, troubleshooting, and experimentation aimed at enhancing the reliability and performance of our software.

While expertise in every area is not required, a solid foundation in software engineering and a curiosity about complex distributed systems are essential for success in this position.

Utilize your Python development expertise to enhance the Metal as a Service (MAAS) software, accommodating a diverse range of server and network hardware.

Actively contribute to expanding MAAS functionality by integrating with testing and scheduling tools.

Manage a fully automated server lab remotely, ensuring its availability for other teams while working with the latest server and network technology from leading vendors.

Enhance hardware and network monitoring through automation.

Collaborate with fellow MAAS engineers, data center hardware specialists, and teams responsible for certifying hardware for Ubuntu, as well as kernel engineers and other users of the hardware lab.

Qualifications include:

  • STEM Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science or Software Engineering
  • Experience in Python programming
  • Proficiency in Linux Administration
  • Effective communication skills in English
  • Strong academic background from high school and preferably university
  • Experience with both Rack and Virtual systems
  • A systematic approach to testing
  • A passion for performance engineering
  • Experience in data center operations

We consider various factors, including geographical location, experience, and performance, when determining compensation globally. Compensation is reviewed annually to acknowledge exceptional performance, with additional performance-driven bonuses available. We strive to balance our programs to meet local needs while ensuring fairness on a global scale.

Annual holiday leave is also provided.
