Canonical is a prominent provider of open-source software and operating systems catering to the global enterprise and technology sectors. Our platform, Ubuntu, is extensively utilized in groundbreaking enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Our clientele includes leading public cloud and silicon providers, along with industry frontrunners across various sectors. The company is a trailblazer in global distributed collaboration, employing over colleagues in more than 75 countries, with minimal office-based roles. Teams convene two to four times annually in diverse locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

As a founder-led, profitable, and expanding organization, we are currently seeking a MAAS Systems Engineer to enhance tooling aimed at improving data center operational efficiency. In this role, you will oversee the daily management and operations of our lab, which is utilized for Ubuntu server certification of US-based silicon and server designs. Your responsibilities will include developing and utilizing software to deploy and configure servers and network switches, while addressing complex design challenges associated with efficient and rapid scaling.

You will engage with a variety of hardware, including cutting-edge new silicon developed by our Kernel Team and Partner Engineering teams, ensuring optimal performance of Linux, as well as established hardware to guarantee seamless and efficient operation of new Ubuntu versions. This position combines software engineering focused on reliable automated hardware commissioning and deployment, alongside testing, troubleshooting, and experimentation aimed at enhancing the reliability and performance of our software. While expertise in all areas is not required, a strong foundation in software engineering and a curiosity about complex distributed systems are essential for success in this role. If you enjoy experimenting in your home lab, possess solid Python skills, and have an interest in data center hardware, this opportunity is well-suited for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize your Python development expertise to enhance the Metal as a Service (MAAS) software, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of server and network hardware.
  • Expand MAAS functionality by developing integrations with testing and scheduling software.
  • Contribute to improvements and fixes for testing software.
  • Manage a fully automated server lab remotely, ensuring its availability for other teams.
  • Enhance hardware and network monitoring through automation.
  • Collaborate with fellow MAAS engineers and data center hardware specialists, as well as teams responsible for certifying hardware for Ubuntu.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, preferably in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • A strong desire to understand system behaviors and a drive to implement solutions.
  • Experience in Python programming.
  • Proficiency in Linux Administration.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • A collaborative spirit to work with a globally distributed team of dedicated engineers.
  • Exceptional academic performance throughout your educational journey.
  • Willingness to travel for internal events.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with both Rack and Virtual systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities.
  • A systematic approach to testing.
  • A passion for performance engineering.
  • Experience in data center operations.

What We Offer:

We consider geographical location, experience, and performance when determining compensation globally. We conduct annual reviews of compensation to recognize outstanding performance. In addition to base salary, we provide a performance-driven annual bonus and additional benefits that reflect our values and ideals. Our programs are designed to meet local needs while ensuring fairness on a global scale.

  • A distributed work environment with opportunities for in-person team sprints.
  • A personal learning and development budget.
  • Annual compensation reviews.
  • Recognition rewards.
  • Annual leave.
  • Parental leave.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Opportunities to travel to meet colleagues.
