Aecon Industrial is currently seeking a full-time Civil Estimator to join our team. The Civil Estimator will be tasked with generating precise and timely cost estimates for designated projects. This role involves delivering well-organized estimates, budgets, and schedules while effectively managing Aecon's risk.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately interpret and analyze tender drawings and specifications.
- Present comprehensive project scope, staging, timing, constraints, risks, and potential cost-saving opportunities to bid teams and management.
- Contribute to project management and leadership during the proposal phase, including participation in team meetings.
- Review design alternatives and recommend optimal solutions based on cost, engineering, quality, or material availability.
- Conduct and/or oversee quantity take-offs from tender drawings.
- Engage in risk assessment and management processes, identifying risk areas and contributing to the Risk Register.
- Formulate all tender costs—labor, material, equipment—and procure subcontractor scope and costs for quotation submission.
- Lead the estimate close-out process, including tender reviews and sub-proposal analyses.
- Facilitate the successful transition and handover of estimating documents to project execution teams.
Qualifications:
- 5-10 years of experience in civil and concrete estimating within the construction or industrial sector.
- A diploma in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is an asset.
- Strong understanding of various construction contract types (e.g., Lump Sum, Cost Reimbursable, Unit Price, Design Build, etc.).
- Familiarity with industry standards, specifications, and contract language.
- Proven ability to conduct thorough investigations of tenders, accurately assessing site conditions that influence bid costs and ensuring constructability.
- Effective negotiation skills with vendors for project purchasing needs, adhering to Aecon's procurement requirements.
- Advanced understanding of balanced/unbalanced bids and margin forecasting at the tender stage.
- Ability to clearly present the essence and strategy of completed estimates to management, defending constructability and calculated cost targets.
- Expertise in submitting well-crafted requests for clarifications from clients, maintaining Aecon's advantageous position.
- Proficient in the job handover process from estimating to operations.
- Familiarity with estimating software (e.g., Hard Dollar Estimating software) and strong computer skills, including MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Autodesk Software and scheduling software like Oracle P6 is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
