Job Overview:

The Laboratory Medicine and Genetics (LMG) program is a multifaceted initiative that operates across multiple locations, encompassing various disciplines such as biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, transfusion medicine, flow cytometry, anatomical pathology, and regional genetics. With over 6 million tests conducted annually and a significant volume of specimens processed daily, our laboratory is supported by a comprehensive Quality Management System that promotes continuous learning and improvement.

We seek a dynamic leader with a proven history of collaboration, team engagement, and strategic decision-making. The successful candidate will oversee all facets of the Microbiology Laboratory, focusing on team development, risk mitigation, and enhancing patient safety. You will play a pivotal role in the coordination, assessment, and ongoing enhancement of laboratory operations while contributing to the strategic and operational planning of the program.

Key Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with an inter-professional team to develop and implement strategic and operational initiatives.
  • Provide laboratory expertise to various programs, committees, and educational initiatives.
  • Work with physician partners to determine the quality and scope of patient testing based on evolving needs and technologies.
  • Engage in committees to network with peers for benchmarking and best practices.
  • Guide the formulation and approval of policies and procedures aligned with quality management and regulatory standards.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and continuous education of laboratory staff.
  • Mentor and provide constructive performance feedback to team members.
  • Manage staffing, equipment maintenance, and inventory within budgetary constraints.
  • Support the procurement of essential capital equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Laboratory Quality Manager to implement quality initiatives that enhance service delivery and minimize patient risk.
  • Analyze data trends, coordinate quality improvement efforts, and direct corrective actions.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and promote safety initiatives in partnership with relevant departments.
  • Adhere to and promote the Laboratory Quality Management System.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree in a health-related field and/or membership in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • A minimum of three years of leadership experience and at least five years of relevant experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Strong understanding of Microbiology is essential.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and project management.
  • Ability to set long-term strategic goals and effectively communicate them to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficient in business management practices, including strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and communication skills.
  • Experience in collaborative leadership with physician partners.
  • Knowledge of best practices, relevant legislation, and requirements for Microbiology Laboratories.
  • Ability to lead effectively during periods of change and transition.
  • A strong desire for continuous learning and understanding of the strategic direction of the Microbiology Laboratory.

Position Location: The Microbiology Laboratory operations are based at Credit Valley Hospital, with potential travel to other sites as necessary.
