We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Lawyer to join our Intake & Early Resolutions department. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in the effective investigation, assessment, and resolution of complaints against lawyers, students, and former members.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in law, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will be responsible for conducting fair, proportionate, and timely investigations, resolving complaints using informal means where warranted, and preparing clear and concise assessment letters for files closed with no further action.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct investigations and gather evidence to assess complaints against lawyers, students, and former members.
- Resolve complaints using informal means where warranted, and prepare assessment letters for files closed with no further action.
- Prepare detailed opinions for the Discipline Committee's consideration and present those opinions.
- Exercise sound judgment in file handling and in assessing complaints to determine whether further action is necessary by the Law Society.
Qualifications:
- Practising membership in the Law Society of BC or eligibility for membership.
- A minimum of five years of recent practice experience. May require specific subject matter expertise.
- Superior writing and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Mediation and Trauma-Informed training is an asset.
