About This Opportunity

The Yarmouth Regional Hospital (YRH) and Digby General Hospital (DGH) are in search of dedicated emergency medicine specialists to fulfill a 1.5 FTE position across both facilities. Situated in the southwestern region of Nova Scotia, these hospitals cater to a combined population of approximately 60,000 across three counties. The successful candidate may also engage in educational activities through the family medicine residency program based in Yarmouth and/or collaborate with medical students from Dalhousie University.

YRH, established in 1912, has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare facility serving the communities of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby Counties. With 124 inpatient beds, YRH offers a wide array of primary and secondary services, including:

DGH, founded in 1924, provides comprehensive medical services to the local population, including primary, inpatient, restorative, and ambulatory care, as well as day surgery. The facility features a 20-bed medical and alternate level of care unit, which collaborates closely with the collaborative emergency centre in Annapolis Royal and Yarmouth. Additionally, DGH houses a 13-bed restorative care unit focused on patient rehabilitation.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct patient examinations and order necessary diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures.
  • Provide guidance to patients regarding healthcare, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Consult and refer patients to other medical professionals as needed.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • Prescribe and administer medications, treatments, inoculations, and vaccinations.
Expected Hours
  • Full-time position shared between YRH and DGH.
Qualifications
  • Certification in Emergency Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada is considered an asset.
  • All applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) training.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Experience in an emergency department is advantageous.
