Job Title: New Student Transition Specialist

Job Summary:

The New Student Transition Specialist is a key role in supporting the successful transition of new graduate students into the University of Waterloo. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining integrated programs to ensure a smooth transition for graduate students, with a focus on international students and underrepresented groups.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement graduate student transition programming, ensuring initiatives are well-integrated and coordinated into the overall new student transition strategy.
  • Be knowledgeable and up-to-date on the needs of incoming graduate students, including international students and underrepresented groups.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with key campus and faculty partners and graduate students.
Program Development and Administration:
  • Develops, coordinates, and maintains targeted programs and initiatives designed to ensure the successful transition of new graduate students for all three academic terms via virtual, in-person or hybrid offerings.
  • Applies research, wise practices, and knowledge of student trends to develop and execute specialized programming for priority graduate student populations.
  • Leverages resources, knowledge, and expertise in the SSO to assist in the design of transition programs when appropriate in partnership with the SSO leadership team and campus partners.
  • Provides guidance to stakeholders on campus who support new student transition programs/opportunities to create an engaged and inclusive community of University of Waterloo graduate students.
Relationship Building:
  • Works closely with both the NST team and International Student Experience (ISE) team to ensure programs and strategies complement one another and, when appropriate, are consistent in delivery and outcomes for all incoming students.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to ensure students are provided with necessary support, resources, and information pertinent to their University of Waterloo experience.
Staff and Volunteer Development:
  • Provides strong leadership to student staff including setting clear and reasonable goals and expectations, providing on-going feedback, and establishing a strong foundation for performance through comprehensive training and on-going professional development as required.
  • Outlines clear expectations and responsibilities for student staff and volunteers, as they relate to graduate student transition programming.
Research and Reporting:
  • Strong understanding of the graduate student experience at the University of Waterloo.
  • Applies current research, wise practices, student development theory, and student trends to design intentional, proactive, and responsive orientation programs that are in line with the needs of our students and Faculty partners.
Qualifications:
  • University degree required; Master's degree or equivalent experience in a related field (e.g. Leadership, Higher Education, Student Services) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working in post-secondary student services with student, staff, and faculty.
