Position Overview

The Structural CAD Designer plays a vital role within our engineering team, contributing to both large and small-scale projects. This position involves the creation of structural 3D models and 2D drawings that align with project specifications, under the guidance of the Lead Structural CAD Designer. The successful candidate will engage in diverse projects, including building foundations, equipment bases, steel framing, and various structural designs for hydropower, mining, and industrial applications. Responsibilities encompass site investigations, as well as modeling and drafting for both preliminary planning and detailed engineering phases across multi-disciplinary projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Lead Structural CAD Designer in fulfilling project requirements related to scope, quantities, cost, and schedule.
  • Prepare contract drawings, maintain records, and conduct statistical analyses as needed.
  • Create and update technical and engineering drawings utilizing 2D and 3D CAD software.
  • Conduct conceptual layout work and develop design details.
  • Review drawings prior to finalization to ensure accuracy.
  • Coordinate with designers, drafters, and engineers across disciplines.
  • Perform clash detection of models with other discipline models.
  • Participate in formal engineering review processes.
  • Verify onsite conditions and dimensions related to existing structures.
  • Provide technical assistance to clients and junior designers/drafters.
  • Delegate tasks to junior designers/drafters as necessary and ensure quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Engage in design coordination with engineers and other disciplines to produce comprehensive drawing packages.
  • Conduct field investigations and generate detailed field reports with sketches as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced Diploma in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in structural CAD design and drafting.
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D structural CAD software, including AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D. Experience with BIM coordination and Bentley MicroStation is advantageous.
  • Experience in a large project, multi-disciplinary EPCM environment.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and codes relevant to structural design in Ontario.
  • Ability to develop detailed design elements using diverse sources such as site studies, vendor drawings, and engineering sketches.
  • Proven capability to maintain positive relationships with clients and team members to enhance collaboration and deliverables.
