Biochemical Genetics Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Biochemical Genetics Laboratory Technologist to join our team at the Provincial Health Services Authority. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures, including biochemical genetics testing, to support the diagnosis and monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism.
Key Responsibilities- Perform Biochemical Genetics Testing: Conduct biochemical genetics testing, including tandem mass spectrometry, chromatography, and manual quantitative assays, to support the diagnosis and monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism.
- Operate Laboratory Equipment: Operate a variety of laboratory equipment, including liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, advanced enzymology, and tissue culture equipment.
- Prepare Reagents and Standards: Prepare reagents, standards, and quality control material to be used for test procedures.
- Enter Data and Prepare Reports: Enter patient data into the laboratory information system and prepare laboratory worksheets and reports.
- Monitor Quality Control: Monitor quality control of test procedures and report any unusual or questionable test results to the Pathologist or Head Technologist.
- Ensure STAT and Priority Tests: Ensure that STAT and priority tests are assayed and reported promptly and in accordance with established protocols.
- Monitor Laboratory Supplies: Monitor laboratory supplies and stock up to adequate amounts.
- Orient New Staff: Orient new technologists, students, and residents in the use of molecular techniques by demonstration and verbal instructions.
- Participate in Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance programs for the Section through methods such as gathering data on turn-around times for test procedures, and monitoring performance and quality indicators.
- Perform Other Related Duties: Perform other related duties as required.
- Certification: Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
- Education and Experience: Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology plus two (2) years recent, related experience including biochemical genetics procedures or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of biochemical genetics procedures, ability to operate related equipment, knowledge of computerized laboratory information systems, ability to communicate effectively, ability to organize workload and set priorities, physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
