Position Overview

The Forestry and Peatlands Branch within the Department of Economic Development, Investment, Trade, and Natural Resources is in search of a qualified candidate for the role of Forester - Operations Specialist. This position is crucial for the effective management of forestry operations and will be based in the Eastern Region of Manitoba.

Employment Conditions:
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada is required.
  • A valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence or an equivalent from another province is mandatory.
  • Willingness to work overtime and travel out-of-town for extended periods, including overnight stays in various accommodations, is essential.
  • Ability to travel to remote areas throughout Manitoba using various modes of transportation, including trucks, all-terrain vehicles, boats, and aircraft.
  • Physical capability to perform job duties, which may involve moderate physical exertion, such as carrying equipment over challenging terrain and in adverse weather.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in Forestry or a related field, with equivalent experience in field forestry operations considered.
  • Proven experience in planning, executing, supervising, and assessing silvicultural activities.
  • Experience in overseeing timber harvesting operations.
  • Human resource management experience, including supervision and training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with stakeholders and team members.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capacity to work independently with excellent organizational skills to manage workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcGIS and/or ArcGIS Pro, and proficiency in mapping.
  • Familiarity with forestry legislation and policies.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in preparing annual reports and forest management plans.
  • Budget preparation and management experience.
  • Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous communities.
Key Responsibilities: This role supports the Regional Forester in the formulation, execution, and assessment of forest management strategies, resource allocation, and forest renewal initiatives. The selected candidate will engage with other departmental staff and programs to ensure effective operations within the Eastern Region.
