Position Overview:


We are seeking a highly qualified scientist to fill the role of Vice President of Scientific Affairs, responsible for steering our early-stage drug discovery initiatives.

This pivotal leadership position will oversee all scientific endeavors and contribute to shaping the strategic direction of Apogee.

The Vice President will lead research teams to achieve discovery, preclinical, and early clinical objectives.

This role emphasizes scientific contributions over managerial duties, allowing the Vice President to focus primarily on scientific advancements in the immediate term.

This unique position offers the chance to make significant contributions in a vibrant scientific setting, collaborating closely with a talented scientific team and supportive executive management.

Key Responsibilities:


From the outset, demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the pharmacology of the endocannabinoid system (eCB) and a solid grasp of small-molecule inhibitors targeting eCB enzymes.

Assess the viability and potential challenges of Apogee's ongoing projects and provide strategic recommendations to expedite clinical entry.

Conduct comparative analyses of Apogee's initiatives against industry competition and relevant scientific literature (SWOT analysis), focusing on clinical successes and setbacks.

Develop and execute Research Operating Plans for each project.
Identify necessary in-house assay capabilities and determine tasks suitable for outsourcing. Collaborate with experts in DMPK, biology, pharmacology, toxicology, and other scientific disciplines to advance lead compounds.
Explore the expansion of clinical indications for existing programs and consider additional projects; evaluate potential in-licensing opportunities.
Lead a team of exceptional scientists across chemistry, biology, and analytical fields, providing scientific direction, technical oversight, mentorship, and career development.
Engage with scientists at collaborating contract research organizations (CROs) to enhance project outcomes.
Establish and nurture relationships with external partners, including CROs and academic institutions.
Generate novel intellectual property (IP), contribute to patent applications, and maintain a working knowledge of patent prosecution.

Stay informed about the latest trends and advancements in drug discovery and therapeutic areas critical to the company.

Attend relevant industry conferences and technical symposiums as necessary.
Present findings and updates to executive leadership, investors, and other stakeholders.

Future responsibilities may include engaging with external investors, advisory boards, regulatory agencies, and pharmaceutical partners as appropriate.


Qualifications:


PhD in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, biology, or a related discipline, with over 15 years of progressive experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical sector; a proven track record as a 'drug hunter'.

Demonstrated success in leading the discovery and optimization of small molecule drug candidates, with a history of advancing compounds into clinical trials.Proven expertise in drug discovery across key areas:

pharmacology, chemistry, drug metabolism pharmacokinetics (DMPK), in vivo efficacy, safety & toxicology, and intellectual property (IP).

Exceptional problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities, with a talent for managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.

Strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to motivate, develop, and inspire a team of skilled scientists in chemistry and biology.

Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the capacity to convey complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
