About the Opportunity

The Adolescent Intensive Services (AIS) is a comprehensive treatment program that provides 24/7 mental health and addiction services to adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 years old. As a Recreation Therapy Associate, you will work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to provide therapeutic-based interventions and programming to enhance the development of life-long leisure skills and attitudes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and develop program content to promote leisure skills and attitudes in adolescents with mental health and addiction issues.
  • Implement therapeutic-based interventions and programming in collaboration with the Recreation Therapist.
  • Ensure group safety during on-site and community programming.
  • Manage volunteer resources and equipment.
  • Document and report observations to the Recreation Therapist.
Requirements
  • Completion of a two-year Diploma in Human Services Therapeutic Recreation or equivalent program.
  • Minimum two years of experience as a Recreation Therapy Associate.
  • Recent experience working with adolescents and families.
  • Successful completion of a CPR Level C Health Care Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) course within the last 12 months.
  • NCI certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in leisure/recreation program planning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and addictions disorders and their impact on health, well-being, and quality of life.
  • Working knowledge of harm reduction approaches and substance misuse and/or concurrent disorders best practices.
  • Working knowledge of Trauma Informed Care and the Connect Model.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to set priorities, and manage workload effectively.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional care team.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to family-centred care.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and promote interpersonal and community relationships.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competency in meeting IWK clinical documentation standards.
  • Valid minimal Class 5 Nova Scotia driver's license and ability to drive program van.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing behaviour management strategies.
  • Competencies in other languages considered an asset.
