Role Overview: WestJet is seeking a dedicated Capital Accountant to enhance our Finance team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional standards of performance, possess strong problem-solving skills, and show initiative in their work. This position requires collaboration with Finance colleagues and various departmental stakeholders, focusing on multiple facets of the accounting cycle with an emphasis on process enhancement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage month-end procedures, including the creation of journal entries, evaluation of expenditures for capitalization, balance sheet reconciliations, and the assembly of the month-end capital asset reporting package.
  • Oversee the posting of monthly amortization, asset transfers, and disposals.
  • Prepare monthly continuity schedules for various entities.
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of Right of Use and Lease Liability Accounting.
  • Compile monthly capital cash flow statements for multiple companies.
  • Act as the primary contact for Finance team members and non-Finance departments regarding capital matters.
  • Respond promptly to ad-hoc requests to support business decision-making.
  • Draft quarterly financial statement notes.
  • Conduct detailed accounting and reporting tasks regularly to ensure accurate and timely period-end closures, including:
    • Posting monthly accruals, reclassifications, and other journal entries.
    • Developing and refining balance sheet reconciliations while investigating discrepancies.
    • Preparing variance analyses on monthly and quarterly figures.
  • Continuously enhance processes and procedures to improve month-end deliverables in line with technological and operational advancements.
  • Collaborate with various teams across the organization to assist with ad-hoc reporting, analysis, projects, and decision support as needed.
  • Work alongside Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) to aid in forecast and budget preparation.
  • Be an engaged member of the Finance team, contributing to discussions and demonstrating flexibility in task completion.
  • Ensure adherence to C-Sox requirements, including the maintenance and enhancement of controls documentation and processes.

Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree in a relevant field (e.g., Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting or Finance).
  • Completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA).
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of post-designation experience in an accounting capacity, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Proficiency in Excel and a strong interest in adopting new technologies.
  • Familiarity with IFRS, particularly IAS 16 and IAS 39.
  • Strong communication skills to foster collaborative relationships with business partners and provide guidance to peers.
  • Experience with JDE or similar ERP systems is a plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and time management skills, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to adapt and manage multiple tasks accurately while meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality at all times.
