Job Summary

The Senior Legal Counsel will assist the Legal Department in matters relating to corporate transactions, real estate, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This role will provide legal advice to CAPREIT and its affiliates, review and draft contracts, and work with various teams to draft template agreements and respond to queries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to CAPREIT and its affiliates on corporate transactions, real estate, and compliance matters.
  • Assist the Vice President, Legal and Corporate Secretary with the overall management of the legal function and legal affairs of CAPREIT and its affiliates.
  • Review and draft contracts to support the Operations team, Operations support functions, and corporate services departments.
  • Work with the Operations team, Operations support functions, and corporate services departments to draft template agreements, notices, releases, and other standard documents.
  • Work with the Development team on projects, expropriations, easements, and other municipal, land-use planning, and development-related matters.
  • Assist with managing disputes and litigation claims.
  • Advise on enterprise-wide projects.
  • Assist in preparing reports and memorandums on legal matters.
  • Work with external counsel, as required.

Requirements

  • Law degree from a recognized Canadian law school.
  • At least 4 years of experience post-call at a law firm or in-house counsel position with knowledge of corporate, commercial, and real estate law.
  • Ability to identify issues, keep abreast of legislative changes and legal developments, and maintain good connections with key external counsel and firms.
  • High level of organization.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Licensed lawyer, Ontario bar, with 4+ years of experience post-call.
  • Strong, adaptable, and flexible team player.
  • Ability to speak French and/or Dutch is an asset.
