Operating Room Sterile Supply Technician

BC Cancer

The Operating Room Sterile Supply Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare team by ensuring the availability of clean, sterilized instruments and supplies for surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform thorough washing, cleaning, decontaminating, assembling, and packaging of surgical instruments, trays, and equipment for the Operating Room and other departments.
  • Utilize processing equipment such as ultrasonic washers, washer sterilizers, and steam autoclaves effectively.
  • Oversee the cleaning and sterilization processes, documenting results and notifying supervisors of any discrepancies.
  • Prepare instrument sets and supplies for surgical operations following established protocols.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of sterile and unsterile supplies by restocking and reprocessing as necessary.
  • Monitor supply usage and communicate with supervisors regarding replenishment needs.
  • Fulfill supply requisitions from various departments within the organization.
  • Coordinate the collection and delivery of supplies between the Sterile Supply department and other areas.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Sterile Supply Processing Course.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Understanding of medical and surgical aseptic techniques.
  • Capability to meet the physical demands of the role, including lifting and standing for extended periods.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage workload efficiently.
  • Proficiency in operating sterilization and cleaning equipment.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with staff at all levels.
  • Commitment to fostering reconciliation and understanding of Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism principles.
  • Awareness of the socio-economic and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities.
