Operating Room Sterile Supply Technician

The Operating Room Sterile Supply Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare team by ensuring the meticulous collection, delivery, cleaning, decontamination, packaging, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies utilized in the Surgical Suite and other designated areas within the Agency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly wash, clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, and package instruments, trays, sets, and equipment for the Surgical Suite and various user departments.
  • Operate essential equipment including ultrasonic washers, washer sterilizers, steam autoclaves, and other related processing machinery.
  • Oversee the cleaning and sterilization processes, documenting results and promptly reporting any discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Select instrument sets and supplies for surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment by restocking depleted items and reprocessing outdated sterile sets and bundles.
  • Monitor the usage of supplies within the section and notify the supervisor when replenishment is necessary.
  • Fulfill sterile and unsterile supply requisitions from all user departments.
  • Collect and deliver supplies to and from the Sterile Supply department and other user departments.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A completed Grade 12 education.
  • Completion of a Sterile Supply Processing Course.

Additionally, candidates should demonstrate:

  • A solid understanding of medical and surgical asepsis.
  • The physical capability to meet job demands, including lifting, pushing carts, and standing for extended periods.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage workload effectively.
  • Proficiency in operating relevant equipment such as washer sterilizers and steam sterilizers.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • A commitment to fostering reconciliation in Canada, in alignment with TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Awareness of the social, economic, political, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities, along with familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism initiatives.
