About the Role

The Indigenous Patient Navigator plays a vital role in ensuring the provision of culturally safe and client-centered care for Indigenous patients. This position supports the integration of existing navigational and advocacy support with community and regional health authority partners, promoting access to appropriate care and improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Consultative and Navigational Services: Support patients in communicating with healthcare providers, addressing cultural and spiritual needs, and navigating system barriers and challenges.
  • Coordinate Access to Services: Facilitate access to healthcare services, coordinate referrals, and ensure culturally competent care.
  • Build Relationships and Partnerships: Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and healthcare providers to improve care and services.
  • Advocate for Patients: Advocate for the needs of patients within the healthcare system, promoting cultural safety and humility.
  • Support Healthcare Providers: Provide resources and support for healthcare providers to deliver culturally safe care.
  • Maintain Documentation and Records: Develop and maintain accurate documentation and records related to Indigenous patient needs.
  • Develop Regional Strategies: Collaborate with Indigenous communities and organizations to develop regional strategies to improve care for Indigenous patients.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Diploma or degree in a related health discipline, health or social sciences, or patient care/clinical related discipline, with 1-3 years of experience working in Indigenous healthcare.
  • Knowledge and Experience: Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, including knowledge of Indigenous demographics, languages, cultures, customs, and traditions.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Cultural Competency and Safety: Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and application of cultural safety and competency within healthcare.
  • Reconciliation and Anti-Racism: Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada, as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
