Job Overview

The Parliamentary Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of a Member of Parliament. This position involves a variety of responsibilities that contribute to the effective functioning of parliamentary duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage reception tasks, including greeting visitors and coordinating with security for necessary access passes.
  • Conduct research and complete assignments related to parliamentary committees as directed by the Member of Parliament.
  • Attend pertinent stakeholder meetings and events, ensuring appropriate follow-up actions are taken.
  • Keep track of local media, social media platforms, community concerns, news updates, and current events, ensuring that relevant team members are informed.
  • Organize and provide logistical support for tours, events, and outreach initiatives led by the MP.
  • Observe daily proceedings in the House of Commons.
  • Sort and prioritize all incoming correspondence and invitations for the Parliament Hill Office.

Required Qualifications

  • A university degree or post-secondary education in political science or a related discipline, along with experience in a senior management support role, or a suitable combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Previous experience in an administrative support capacity within an office environment.
  • Familiarity with administrative methods, techniques, and practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong communication skills with a command of written French.
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and a high level of discretion, with the ability to cultivate and maintain professional relationships.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Canadian politics and parliamentary services.
  • Capability to work collaboratively within a team and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Awareness of government priorities and messaging.
  • Ability to respond efficiently to urgent requests.

Preferred Assets

  • Experience in assisting an elected representative at either the Federal or Provincial level.

Operational Considerations

  • The nature of this role may necessitate occasional extended hours and weekend work.
