Job Title: Director of Legislative Affairs and Justice

Join the Métis Nation team as a Director of Legislative Affairs and Justice, where you will play a key role in shaping the organization's policy and advocacy efforts. As a senior advisor, you will work closely with the leadership team to develop and implement strategies that positively impact the well-being of the Métis Nation.

About the Role:

The Director of Legislative Affairs and Justice will be responsible for providing expert advice on federal and international laws, policies, and regulations that impact the Métis people. You will analyze complex information, identify key issues, and develop recommendations to inform the organization's policy and advocacy efforts.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide strategic advice on legislative affairs, including international legal matters and justice-related initiatives.
  2. Develop and implement policy solutions that respond to the needs of the Métis Nation citizens and the legal and legislative structures of the relevant subject area and jurisdictions.
  3. Represent the Métis Nation at various governmental and agency committees, forums, meetings, and conferences dealing with legislative or regulatory matters affecting Métis people.
  4. Exchange ideas and provide advice and feedback to external stakeholders on the effectiveness of current and proposed strategies, policies, programs, and initiatives.
  5. Assess and synthesize discussions emanating from federal department and agency consultations and prepare insightful and timely reports to MNC officials.
  6. Establish relationships with regional, domestic, and international organizations and agencies and collaborate to shape policies, programs, and strategies aimed at the Métis people.
  7. Prepare or contribute to technical press releases, communications, position papers, and responses to inquiries regarding MNC positions on legal or other relevant matters.
  8. Keep abreast of federal and international legal developments impacting Métis peoples and draft reports to ensure that the MNC and other key stakeholders are made aware of these developments and their implications in a comprehensive, clear, and timely manner.
  9. Draft technical speaking and briefing notes and provide in-depth explanations of significant federal and international legal issues for the MNC President, Vice-President, and other senior officials as needed.
  10. Prepare proposals, workplans, and budgets, and oversee contribution/funding arrangements, contracts, and program expenditures.
  11. Convene and facilitate meetings of stakeholders, governing members, and government officials, as required.
  12. Onboard, manage, and evaluate staff to ensure that they are in alignment with and delivering on the organization's goals and objectives in relation to justice and legislative programs and initiatives.
  13. Present at national and international meetings and forums dealing with legal matters of interest to the Métis community.
  14. Play an active role on the Policy team and support colleagues as needed.
  15. Oversee performance management of direct reports.
  16. Contribute to the onboarding process by assisting new hires in acclimating to the organization, ensuring a smooth and positive integration.
  17. Participate in the termination process when necessary, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal requirements.
Qualifications:
  1. Law degree, and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario, or other provincial/territorial law society, and a demonstrated passion for the law as it relates to Indigenous peoples.
  2. A minimum of eight (8) years of a combination of relevant education, training, or experience.
  3. In-depth understanding of UNDRIP, UNDA, Bill C-92, Bill C-53, and other legislation and policies affecting Métis people.
  4. Research experience, including a solid understanding of quantitative and qualitative research principles and methods.
  5. Extensive experience working with and lobbying government agencies, elected representatives, and committees at a national and international level as well as knowledge of the overall functioning of government.
  6. Experience in managing and mentoring staff to ensure they are meeting their goals and objectives through regular meetings and performance management.
  7. Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making ability.
  8. Superior relationship-building ability and ability to accommodate the needs and interests of others.
  9. Ability to manage multiple projects and teams simultaneously and adjust to frequently changing demands.
  10. Successful financial negotiating skills and an ability to work with government and non-government agencies to secure the best funding outcomes on behalf of the organization.
  11. Analytical ability to quickly synthesize complex information and situations and provide timely advice and creative, realistic, and appropriate solutions in the best interests of the MNC.
  12. Demonstrated passion for creating positive outcomes for Métis people.

  1. Understanding of Métis culture, history, and the unique challenges faced by Métis communities.
  2. Knowledge of the Métis Nation's historical, political, and legal issues.
  3. High level of tact, diplomacy, discretion.
  4. Excellent judgment and creativity.
  5. Organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills.
  6. Resilience and adaptability.
  7. Excellent communication skills: professionally articulating a position and influencing others through reasoned and well-thought-out ideas.
  8. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify strengths and weaknesses and recommend areas for improvement and growth.
Additional Requirements:
  • Complete a clean Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector.
  • Willingness to travel domestically or internationally, at times with short notice.
