Lead Security Engineer

Grafana Cloud processes millions of metrics, log lines, and traces every second from our clients' environments into a robust, low-latency architecture that efficiently manages and stores this data, delivering it to dashboards and alerting systems. Our goal is to scale this to hundreds of millions per second, making it essential to enhance our performance, boost our reliability, and do so in a resourceful manner.
The Internal Engineering Platform, managed by the Platform department, equips application engineers with the necessary tools, systems, and Kubernetes clusters to develop, deploy, and operate their workloads. We seek engineers who are passionate about performance and reliability, and who thrive on taking projects from initial concept to full production. Our teams are organized into squads that focus on Cloud Infrastructure, Networking and Security; Engineering Productivity; Capacity Management; Client Administrative Tooling (CAT); and US Federal compliance.
As we operate production services, we implement on-call rotations to maintain system health. Everyone at Grafana Labs strives to incorporate our product suite into their daily activities, making on-call duties a vital way to gain insights into our systems and how users interact with our products.
About the Team & the Position:We are expanding our Platform Security squad. This team is responsible for automating and making decisions regarding our foundational cloud service provider (CSP) and compute security features for Grafana Cloud. This encompasses cloud service provider IAM, Kubernetes access management, secret handling, and workload security. We actively engage in writing and deploying code, aiming to simplify secure decision-making for engineers by offering pre-configured, secure templates and integrating security best practices into our development tools. Additionally, we assist our fellow engineers in making informed security choices for all the products we develop through security assessments and advisory services.

- You have experience in operating your code . Given that many operators and developers utilize our software, having a background in both areas enhances our ability to create better platforms for our users. We predominantly work with Kubernetes and Docker, along with a significant focus on Infrastructure as Code, so familiarity with grafana/tanka is beneficial.
- Knowledge of CSP IAM.
- Experience with cloud security posture management (CSPM).
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code using Terraform/Crossplane.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes administration; experience with Tanka is a plus.
- Background in threat modeling, secure architecture reviews, and security tabletop exercises.
- Streamlining Just In Time Access through IAM and RBAC change processes and automation.
- Automated assessment of live infrastructure and services, identifying misconfigurations and drift.
- Enhancing Cluster and Node level Security Posture and Observability.
- Refining CI/CD Platform Security Posture.
In Canada, the base compensation range for this role is $146,409 CAD - $183,011 CAD. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonuses (if applicable), and other listed benefits.
