Environmental Resources Management (ERM) is in search of a Principal Consultant to enhance our capabilities in Canada, focusing on social performance, political and country risk, stakeholder engagement, security and human rights, crisis management, and strategic communications.

The ideal candidate will offer technical leadership and project management proficiency across these practice areas. They will be agile and responsive to the fast-changing legal, regulatory, and social landscapes, ensuring project management and senior technical guidance at all phases of significant projects both in Canada and internationally. The consultant will represent the firm and play a crucial role in business development and securing new projects, fostering robust and lasting relationships with clients and internal teams. Experience in the mining sector and international contexts is vital for this position. This role is a full-time, permanent opportunity with a flexible hybrid work arrangement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver technical expertise, leadership, and project management for diverse projects in mining, oil and gas, power, infrastructure, renewables, and other industries. Expected activities may include high-level advisory and management of political, social, and security risks; conducting assessments; providing crisis management support; performing social and human rights due diligence; facilitating stakeholder engagement; developing policies and procedures; supporting organizational strategy and communications; and enhancing client advisory and capacity-building efforts.
  • Oversee multiple projects as a project manager to ensure that deliverables meet client expectations regarding scope, budget, timeline, and quality.
  • Contribute to business development in capital project delivery and mergers and acquisitions. Identify and cultivate new opportunities, prepare compelling technical proposals, including scopes and cost estimates, and take a proactive role in nurturing client relationships to support both new and repeat business.
  • Lead, manage performance, recruit, retain, and mentor junior and mid-level consulting staff to foster their professional development, including technical skills, project experience, and consulting capabilities.
  • Collaborate with global ERM resources to strengthen relationships with key clients, enhancing ERM's profile and market presence through exceptional technical delivery and business development.
  • Actively engage in ERM's technical communities and work with global practitioners to execute projects effectively.

QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS:

General

  • Post-secondary degree in engineering, economics, political science, resource management, public policy, or a related field. A Master's degree or higher is advantageous.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in progressively senior roles, including project management and oversight of team-based projects. Previous consulting experience is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience in the mining and/or related sectors, with an understanding of key industry drivers.
  • International work experience or involvement in complex issues with a global perspective.
  • Fluency in English is essential. Proficiency in additional languages (especially French or Spanish) is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and project management methodologies/tools. A Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

  • Ability to present information to clients, stakeholders, communities, and colleagues in a clear and persuasive manner.
  • Business acumen to identify business risks and challenges while recognizing commercial opportunities.
  • Strong commitment to safety, adhering to established health and safety protocols.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and, if necessary, internationally.
