Position Overview

Safety, Security, and Organizational Standards

  • Oversee security contractors and agreements to meet security objectives.
  • Manage compliance with regulations concerning controlled substances and other safety requirements.
  • Act as a primary responder to security incidents, particularly during non-standard hours.
  • Identify potential hazards and implement necessary precautions.
  • Lead training initiatives to ensure personnel operate safely and efficiently, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
  • Conduct timely investigations of accidents and incidents to determine root causes and corrective actions, ensuring follow-up for completion.
  • Encourage proactive identification and elimination of workplace hazards.
  • Address unsafe practices or conditions, ensuring adherence to health and safety policies.
  • Maintain organized workspaces, ensuring cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Regularly audit work and storage areas for compliance with established policies and procedures.

Strategic Planning and Communication

  • Assess and recommend personnel, skills, and capital projects within a dynamic technical and business context.
  • Understand the current and future operational needs and capabilities of facilities and personnel.
  • Provide insights and recommendations regarding facility or operational expansion initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate strategies and recommendations to all management levels.
  • Enhance the use of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to safeguard assets.

Supervision of Maintenance and Facilities Staff

  • Ensure equitable treatment of all team members in accordance with company policies and standards.
  • Optimize staffing levels to meet operational requirements and enhance productivity.
  • Manage daily attendance, leave requests, and vacation schedules.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels and training programs.
  • Ensure staff adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and standardized work practices.
  • Oversee the performance appraisal process, including setting objectives, evaluating performance, and conducting reviews.
  • Manage the Performance Improvement program, addressing issues and providing timely feedback.
  • Coach and counsel team members as necessary.
  • Communicate issues to the Director of Shared Services and provide relevant information to Human Resources.

Management of Maintenance, Facilities, and Production Equipment

  • Ensure the maintenance and repair of facilities, production equipment, HVAC systems, and laboratory apparatus.
  • Oversee building maintenance, external contractor management, and daily cleaning operations, including inventory of cleaning supplies.
  • Understand production requirements and ensure adequate equipment for efficient manufacturing.
  • Establish and manage a Total Productive Maintenance program and work order system to ensure optimal operational efficiency of production equipment.

Achievement of Performance Targets and Financial Management

  • Comprehend safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance targets and their role in achieving operational objectives.
  • Supervise daily staff activities by scheduling workloads and monitoring timelines to meet project goals.
  • Identify significant equipment, material, or information flow issues and initiate corrective action plans.
  • Monitor and report key performance indicators, developing action plans to address gaps.
  • Create budgets and manage expenditures to meet financial targets.

Continuous Improvement Initiatives

  • Identify opportunities for improvement and participate in establishing performance metrics and continuous improvement programs for maintenance and facilities.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives among the team.
  • Lead and maintain visual management processes within the company.
  • Sponsor, lead, facilitate, or engage in specific continuous improvement projects and the establishment of standardized work practices.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties and complete additional projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Educational Background

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Applied Science, preferably in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

Or

  • Certification in a skilled trade, preferably in Electrician, Millwright, Plumbing, or HVAC.
  • 3-5 years of relevant management or supervisory experience.
