Position Overview

Commitment to Safety and Compliance

Oversee security contractors and agreements to fulfill security objectives. Manage security protocols to ensure compliance with regulations concerning controlled substances. Act as a primary responder to security incidents, particularly during non-standard hours. Identify potential hazards and implement necessary precautions. Lead training initiatives to ensure personnel operate safely and efficiently, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Ensure timely and thorough investigations of accidents/incidents to determine root causes and corrective actions. Foster a proactive approach to identifying and eliminating workplace hazards. Correct unsafe behaviors or conditions, ensuring adherence to health and safety policies. Maintain organized workspaces, ensuring everything has its designated place. Conduct regular audits of work and storage areas to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.

Strategic Planning and Communication

Assess and provide recommendations regarding personnel, skills, and capital projects in a dynamic operational environment. Understand current and future operational needs and capabilities. Contribute insights regarding facility or operational expansion strategies. Communicate strategic plans and recommendations effectively to all management levels. Enhance the use of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to protect and maintain assets.

Supervision of Maintenance Personnel

Ensure equitable treatment of all team members in accordance with company policies and standards. Maintain adequate staffing levels to optimize productivity and asset utilization. Manage daily attendance, leave requests, and vacation schedules. Ensure appropriate training programs are in place for staff. Confirm that staff adhere to standard operating procedures (SOP) and/or standardized work practices. Oversee the performance appraisal process, including setting objectives, evaluating performance, and conducting reviews. Manage the performance improvement program, addressing issues and providing timely feedback. Offer coaching and support to team members as necessary. Escalate issues to the Director of Shared Services and provide relevant information to Human Resources.

Maintenance and Equipment Management

Ensure the maintenance and repair of facilities, production equipment, HVAC systems, and laboratory instruments. Oversee building maintenance, management of external contractors, and daily cleaning operations. Understand production requirements to ensure efficient manufacturing capabilities. Establish and manage a Total Productive Maintenance program and work order system to maximize operational efficiency.

Performance and Financial Management

Comprehend safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance targets and their impact on operational objectives. Supervise daily staff activities, scheduling workloads to meet project deadlines. Address significant equipment or material flow issues promptly, implementing corrective action plans. Monitor and report key performance indicators, developing action plans to address gaps. Create and manage budgets to achieve financial targets.

Continuous Improvement Initiatives

Identify opportunities for improvement and participate in establishing performance metrics and continuous improvement programs. Champion continuous improvement initiatives within the team. Maintain visual management processes across the company. Lead or participate in specific continuous improvement projects and the establishment of standardized work practices. Promote a culture of continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Additional Responsibilities

Perform other duties and complete additional projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Educational Background

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Applied Science, preferably in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

Or

Skilled trade certification, preferably in Electrician, Millwright, Plumbing, or HVAC. 3-5 years of relevant management or supervisory experience.

Required Competencies
