At the Aboriginal Health Wellness Centre of Winnipeg Inc, we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Parent Mentor to join our team. As a Parent Mentor, you will play a vital role in supporting families and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Job Summary:The Parent Mentor will work under the general direction of the Senior Mentor/FASD Educator to provide a range of promotion, outreach, intervention, and treatment services and supports to high-risk women and women with difficult life circumstances, including their families. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the needs of Aboriginal families and communities, and will be able to provide culturally sensitive support and guidance.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide Counseling and Support: The Parent Mentor will provide counseling and support to program participants, focusing on establishing individual goals, objectives, and monitoring points within the program. This will involve ongoing monitoring of progress, providing constructive feedback, and necessary interventions.
- Coordinate Home Visitation and Community Support: The Parent Mentor will coordinate home visitation and community support activities to maintain a level of contact and service delivery matching the identified needs of the constituents. This may include providing crisis support and intervention activities as required.
- Maintain Awareness of Community Resources: The Parent Mentor will maintain an awareness of agencies, programs, and supports providing community and culturally based health, wellness, and lifestyle supports relative to the FAS/E Program. This will involve ensuring an effective integration and delivery of services to constituents.
- Facilitate Group Activities: The Parent Mentor will facilitate and provide support to individual and group activities such as personal counseling sessions, Sharing Circles, Sweats, and Retreats. These activities will be designed to provide a base of personal knowledge and reference to constituents through individual and shared interactions and discussions.
- Record Keeping and Reporting: The Parent Mentor will maintain a thorough and accurate record of all constituent contacts, personal visits, and appointments, agency referrals, and document progress towards achieving the goal(s) and objective(s) established collaboratively with each constituent.
- Advocacy and Support: The Parent Mentor will act as an advocate with other agencies, organizations, and individuals for the purpose of addressing immediate needs, while constantly encouraging and supporting personal empowerment, independence, and self-reliance for current constituents.
- Education: Degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, or a combination of experience and education deemed equivalent by the Centre.
- Experience: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in dealing with prenatal substance abuse/misuse issues utilizing a multi-discipline intervention and treatment approach.
- Aboriginal Community Experience: Previous practical experience in working within an Aboriginal-based community services providing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social support to individuals and families.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Computer Skills: Possess a valid Driver's License and a vehicle for work-tasks during the day. Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Teamwork and Case Management: Ability to work independently and effectively with constituents. Maintaining accurate case records. Ability to function effectively in a team.
- Indigenous Language Skills: Ability to communicate in an Indigenous language(s) would be a definite asset.
