Objective:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean, Students, the Director of Career Services and Experiential Learning is tasked with the development and execution of comprehensive career development, job search, and experiential education initiatives for students and alumni.

The experiential education programs at York University are recognized as some of the most extensive and innovative across Canada.

These programs encompass Clinical Opportunities, Mooting Competitions, the Summer Internship Initiative, and the Public Interest Requirement.

This position leads and oversees the Career Services Office and the Experiential Learning Office, contributing to a management team responsible for the strategic direction and administration of student services.

The role involves evaluating existing and prospective experiential education options, formulating strategic plans for experiential learning implementation, and supervising the execution of these initiatives while monitoring practicum requirements.

As a seasoned legal professional with a robust network within the legal sector, this position guarantees the delivery of top-tier career development services to York University students and alumni.

The role is instrumental in cultivating and establishing new employment avenues with a diverse range of legal employers, including private law firms, solo practitioners, corporate legal departments, governmental and non-governmental entities, as well as legal technology service providers.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as Law or Juris Doctor Degree.
Active membership in a provincial law society, in good standing.

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years in a managerial role.
Proven experience in facilitating the introduction, management, and assessment of experiential education within a complex academic environment.

Demonstrated experience in facilitating job placements and/or law student recruitment, with a background in the legal community, non-profit organizations, volunteer sectors, and the public sector.

Expertise:

Familiarity with the curricular goals of the law school and an understanding of the academic values associated with York University's educational programs, particularly in relation to experiential education.

Knowledge of the legal profession and the professional considerations pertinent to legal practitioners and law students.
Acquaintance with the faculty and university landscape, including policy-making bodies and procedures, as well as academic and non-academic regulations.

Proficiency in initiating, developing, implementing, and monitoring a variety of complex and sensitive projects, both long-term and short-term.

Understanding of career development principles and counseling techniques for both JD and graduate students.
Proficient in online information systems.
