Job Title: Safety and Compliance Advisor

Objective
To provide expert guidance and support to operational leadership in the implementation of safe work practices, health and safety policies, compliance with legislative requirements, and training protocols. Ensure that effective safety training, practices, policies, and procedures are established to prevent avoidable health and safety incidents.

Key Responsibilities

Field Safety Leadership:

  • Collaborate with Business Management Teams and the Health & Safety Manager to ensure the effective execution and continuous enhancement of safety, health, and loss prevention processes within designated regional areas.
  • Deliver ongoing, on-site coaching to operations regarding compliance with legislative and corporate safety standards.
  • Guide and support site personnel in recognizing their roles in managing safety, health, and loss prevention matters.
  • Foster and maintain a constructive and proactive relationship with site management, employees, and local regulatory bodies.

Health & Safety Systems:

  • Engage in the successful implementation and delivery of safety programs and communications that align with the Holcim Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).
  • Collaborate with the Health and Safety Manager to identify system, program, and training needs, ensuring alignment with HSMS requirements.

Claims and Return to Work Management:

  • Assist in following up on audit recommendations to ensure timely completion and help eliminate any obstacles to achieving these goals.
  • Support site management in facilitating the early and safe return to work for injured employees.
  • Assist in managing claims processes at the site level.

Process Improvement:

  • Contribute to the development of safe work processes for manufacturing, maintenance, and operational activities, particularly focusing on high-risk tasks.
  • Participate in the identification and sourcing of new safety products, ensuring their effectiveness, consistency, and cost efficiency.
  • Assist management in reviewing Improvement Plan objectives, identifying areas for enhancement, and formulating action plans.

Safety Training:

  • Design and deliver safety-related training modules and programs that reflect applicable legislative requirements and corporate safety policies and practices.

Reporting & Analysis:

  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate health and safety key performance indicator (KPI) information. Develop custom reports to present statistical data in a clear and meaningful manner.

Collaboration with Other Roles:

  • Work closely with site-level and unit-level management on the implementation of Health and Safety Management Systems, Processes, and Training.
  • Engage, coach, and influence site, area, and functional leaders in health and safety activities and processes, aiming for significant field presence within the area of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with the Health and Safety Manager to determine Business Unit priorities and develop relevant policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with peers in other areas to develop programs and systems.
  • Assist Human Resources / Labour Relations in the safety and loss prevention aspects of HR/LR-related programs.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensure that a significant portion of time is spent in the field, with a focus on critical control management.
  • Conduct in-field investigations and prepare documentation for incident investigations in accordance with root cause analysis criteria.
  • Implement health, safety, and environmental improvement plans within the sites under responsibility.
  • Provide ongoing support and assistance related to legislative and corporate requirements concerning health and safety.
  • Support sites during audits and assist in implementing corrective action plans resulting from safety audit activities.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Work Experience:
  • Relevant university degree or equivalent experience in Safety, Industrial Health, or Risk Management, or a college degree in Environment, Hygiene, and Health and Safety.
  • A minimum of 2-5 years of relevant safety or industry experience.
  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English is preferred.
  • CRSP designation is an asset.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to work flexible hours as required by the position, including additional time during peak periods.
  • Ability to remain composed under pressure and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Mature attitude with the capability to work independently.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information responsibly.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of relating to individuals at all corporate levels with diverse backgrounds.
  • Timely and sound decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency in various computer applications is a definite advantage.
  • Familiarity with OHSA and regulations related to mining, industrial, and construction sectors.
