Position Overview
North Island College is on the lookout for skilled candidates to take on a sessional teaching role in Women's Studies for the upcoming academic term.

- Course: WST 100 Global Perspectives on Women, In-Person, Monday & Wednesday, 10:00 am – 11:30 am, Comox Valley Campus.

To effectively execute their teaching responsibilities, faculty members employ organizational capabilities, interpersonal skills, and a solid understanding of the subject matter, teaching methodologies, and curriculum design.

The following responsibilities and typical duties represent a standard job description for teaching faculty, which may include delivering scheduled classes, supporting self-paced, online, and distance learning courses, and providing instruction and supervision in labs and practical workshops.

Responsibilities
1.0 INSTRUCTIONAL
  • Develop and prepare educational materials for various instructional settings;
  • Utilize diverse teaching methods and resources to cater to different learning styles;
  • Instruct in designated subject areas, ensuring all required content is included in course outlines;
  • Guide student learning in a supportive and nurturing atmosphere;
  • Maintain regular availability for students during scheduled office and class hours to discuss their progress and any learning-related concerns;
  • Clearly articulate learning outcomes for programs and courses, along with evaluation methods;
  • Design and implement assessments or evaluations for students, keeping them informed of their academic progress;
  • Submit grades promptly, adhering to institutional policies;
  • Maintain accurate records of student enrollment and performance, submitting necessary documentation to the department Chair at the conclusion of employment.
2.0 TYPICAL PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY

  • Stay informed about and operate within the College's educational policies;
  • Understand the Education and Strategic plans, contributing to their development and supporting the achievement of institutional goals;
  • Notify the Department Chair in a timely manner regarding necessary orders for books, supplies, and equipment to ensure course readiness;
  • Provide insights to the Department Chair on enrollment management strategies for recruitment and retention;
  • Report any health and safety concerns to the Department Chair and assist in resolving issues where feasible;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in relevant computer applications suitable for the educational environment;
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain competencies and qualifications in the relevant discipline;
  • Actively participate as a contributing member of the College community in committees and other activities as appropriate;
  • Attend department meetings and engage in departmental activities during regular working hours, when feasible;
  • Undertake additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the College when course load allows.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Women's Studies or a related field;
  • At least three years of relevant teaching experience in a postsecondary environment;
  • A BC Instructor Diploma or BC Teaching Certificate is highly desirable.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Proven interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated instructional abilities, employing various creative and engaging approaches to enhance learning;
  • Experience in course design and delivery for diverse and inclusive educational settings;
