Job Summary

The Safety Specialist will work closely with the Safety Director to support Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellbeing strategies. Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with client organizations to implement and maintain Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellbeing programs.
  • Conducting focused integrated functional assurance reviews to ensure best practices are consistently implemented across all applicable projects.
  • Championing transformational Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellbeing initiatives and driving their implementation with alliance partners.
  • Supporting a dynamic lesson-learned and business improvement process for Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellbeing across the program.
  • Producing required reports and input data for reporting.
  • Ensuring the delivery of Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellbeing initiatives internally within the MCS team and with Metrolinx.
  • Working with the Safety Manager to develop best practice guides, training, presentations, and briefing packages.
  • Conducting regular safety inspections and audits of jobsites, public areas, and adjacent areas, taking necessary corrective actions to eliminate unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Reporting violations of compliance or regulatory standards to project stakeholders as required.
  • Collecting reports for records and evaluations of safety program performance.
  • Ensuring timely reporting of incidents.
  • Tracking and completing corrective and preventative actions related to incidents, observations, audits, and inspections.
  • Ensuring that corrective and preventative actions are followed up and effective.
  • Ensuring that all contractors and subcontractors' employees comply with jobsite safety rules and regulations.
  • Verifying that applicable Metrolinx and regulatory policies and procedures are implemented on project sites.
  • Supplying information for HSE KPIs to the Safety Director to promote continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Performing additional duties as deemed necessary to support deliverables and key activities during ASP.
  • This position requires full-time presence at the project site, with no remote working.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of regular office software.
  • Experience in developing safety programs and facilitating safety training courses.
  • Injury and incident investigation experience.
  • Field safety audit and inspection experience.
  • Knowledge of OHS legislations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Experience in meeting schedule expectations and delivering work on time.
  • Technical knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary rail and transit projects, and/or complex civil infrastructure projects in brownfield/urban environments with adjacent infrastructure as it relates to safety.
  • Well-organized with superb time management skills.
  • Honesty, dependability, and the ability to be relied upon, responsible, and fulfill obligations.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • Diploma or certificate in Health and Safety, or equivalent training and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of direct onsite safety experience.
  • Professional designation/Certification is an asset – NCSO, CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent.
  • Experience in Railroad and/or transit construction projects is an asset.

Employment Terms and Conditions

This is a permanent position with SYSTRA Canada, reporting to the Safety Director. The location is Toronto, Ontario, Canada, within the Transit division.
