Respite Support Staff Job Description

The Salvation Army London Village is seeking a dedicated Respite Support Staff to join our team. As a Respite Support Staff, you will play a vital role in providing care and support to adults and children with intellectual disabilities and their families.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the physical, emotional, medical, and behavioral needs of program participants are met.
  • Contribute to the planning and facilitation of recreation and leisure activities, community outings, and opportunities for inclusion.
  • Advocate for the health and well-being of program participants.
  • Ensure participants follow through on personal care routines and routines of daily living.
  • Provide intervention for behavioral challenges.
  • Liaise with parents, caregivers, community partners as required.
  • Transport participants in program vehicles.
  • Prepare and distribute meals, snacks, and nourishments as outlined on the approved menu.
  • Complete house maintenance duties and organize and maintain property and program supplies.
Communication and Administration:
  • Ensure proper recording in the daily log, shift change book, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, restraint forms, etc.
  • Report identified needs to team members, Respite Program Supervisor, and/or on-call designate and parent/caregiver.
  • Maintain and update participant records and other program documentation.
Human Resources:
  • Provide support and direction to casual/relief staff, new staff/volunteers/students.
  • Assume shift coordinator tasks as assigned.
Property:
  • Report property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment, and/or repairs needed in the program.
Shift Coordinator Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for dispensing medication and ensuring medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies.
  • Required to complete safety checks, logbook recordings, intake, and discharge functions.

This is a permanent part-time position working 16 hours, two weekends per month. Flexibility to meet program needs is required. The expected start date for this position is June 2024. This position is best suited for someone who can fulfill our pledge to encourage participant independence, advocate for community inclusion, foster friendships, and provide positive role modeling.

Requirements:

  • Completed two years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma, or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Minimum of one year of prior related experience, including direct care work in a social service setting; dealing with crises.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development, and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills, and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e., Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email, and Internet, etc.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver's License is required, current original copy of driver's abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, also required.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
