Overview of the Position

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is in search of locum Internal Medicine specialists to provide comprehensive in-patient consultation and on-call services. This role includes full-time opportunities and details regarding the Locum Incentive Program available for this position.

Candidates must possess a valid license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) or be eligible for licensure.

Incentive Program for Specialists

Approval from the Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) via Medical Services Insurance (MSI) may be sought if any Core Specialty Service requiring 24/7 coverage has more than a 1 in 4 call ratio due to:

  • Unforeseen physician absences due to illness or other unexpected circumstances affecting clinical service delivery.
  • Vacant specialist positions approved for up to six months or longer.
  • Other essential specialty services critical to the health system, as recommended by the Vice President of Medicine.
  • Note that services provided at the QEII are not eligible for this locum program.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority operates as a regional acute care facility, delivering a wide array of primary and secondary services through inpatient, outpatient, and community-based programs.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:

For Specialists:

  • Providing hospital coverage, including on-call duties.
  • Offering office coverage as necessary.
  • Compensation details for locum physicians.

Physicians will receive the following for locum coverage:

  • A minimum daily income guarantee of $/day, plus an additional subsidy of up to $/day (or ICU funding where applicable).
  • The Nova Scotia Health Authority will collaborate with MSI to estimate the additional subsidy based on various factors, with the DHW making the final determination.
  • Physicians may opt for fee-for-service billing, adhering to all criteria aside from the income guarantee and additional subsidy.
  • Per diem compensation at $/day, including mileage and bridge tolls as per locum program guidelines.
  • Coverage for CPSNS licensing fees (if applicable).
  • Reimbursement for flight costs, up to a maximum of $ (receipts required).
  • Partial coverage for accommodations.
  • Compensation for drive time at $ per hour, up to a maximum of $ each way.
Expected Work Hours
  • Full-Time commitment.
  • On-call responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Eligibility for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).
  • Preference for candidates with a subspecialty or special interest in Internal Medicine with Gastroenterology, though this is not mandatory.
