Job Overview
Become a Health Care Support Worker and obtain your Care Aide registration with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).
Vancouver Coastal Health is actively recruiting Health Care Support Workers through the Health Career Access Program (HCAP). Successful candidates will be eligible to register as Care Aides with the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry upon completing the training.
The Community Health (HCAP Home Support) program requires a commitment of approximately 1.5 years. Successful candidates are expected to be available for 37.5 hours per week, including mornings, evenings, and weekends during the program. They may also work as health care support workers for up to 12 days prior to starting their education. The educational component of the program typically lasts eight months. After graduation, employees must fulfill the Return of Service Agreement for 12 months.
Funding will cover 100% of wages, tuition, and educational materials during the training program.
As an applicant for this position, you will be considered for training slots at Home Support sites across VCH for various cohorts. Assignments will be based on seat availability.
As a Health Care Support Worker at Vancouver Coastal Health, your responsibilities will include:
- Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or another regulated healthcare professional.
- Providing a range of non-direct and/or non-clinical healthcare support to clients, residents, families, and/or visitors in long-term care, assisted living, and home environments, in accordance with established care plans and safety protocols.
Education & Experience
- Proof of completion of Grade 10 (or equivalent).
- For applicants with three years of full-time instruction in English: completion of English 10 or equivalent. For those with less than three years of full-time instruction in English: a standardized English language proficiency test score may be required. If English is not your first language, an English test may be necessary.
- A valid BC Driver's License is required for local travel, which necessitates the use of a personal vehicle (for specific regions).
Knowledge & Skills
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to interact positively with others.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate relevant equipment.
Work hours, including days off and work areas, may be subject to change based on operational needs and the provisions of the Collective Agreement and applicable laws. Successful candidates may be required to undergo a Criminal Records Review Check. As per current Public Health Orders, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received a single dose of the most recent updated COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
