The Technology division at Bankwest is responsible for driving all technical transformations within the organization, ensuring that technology is leveraged to fulfill our strategic objectives. Our team works with a diverse array of technologies and initiatives, employing agile methodologies. We are accountable for the leading-edge application of technology and operations across all facets of the bank—from customer products and experiences to essential internal tools.

We are seeking an exceptional Lead Engineering Architect to join our team as we embark on a comprehensive transformation program. You will report directly to the CIO and play a crucial role in our leadership team. Your responsibilities will include providing core technological and domain expertise while designing solutions for complex challenges across Bankwest. A strong risk mindset and a commitment to security from the initial line of code are essential. You will also mentor and guide your colleagues to enhance their engineering skills and create world-class applications.

We are looking for candidates who:
  1. Oversee the overall design and engineering of a platform, providing guidance and ensuring that technical deliveries align with engineering strategy.
  2. Have a proven track record of building and leading teams through complex, multi-year projects, ideally in a similar role within an enterprise or as a CTO in a large organization.
  3. Can design and implement solutions for intricate problems, including onboarding and migrating to new tools while phasing out outdated systems and code.
  4. Define engineering standards, enhance engineering performance, and make decisions regarding frameworks.
  5. Provide technical ownership of key assets, including roadmaps and technical direction.
  6. Drive cultural and process changes that support modern delivery practices.
  7. Set and advance the agenda for key strategic initiatives.
  8. Possess a broad technology background with engineering as a core competency and demonstrated experience in building enterprise software.
  9. Have practical experience in leading teams operating within a DevSecOps model.
  10. Encourage innovation and constructively challenge the status quo while influencing stakeholders and fostering diverse and inclusive teams.
Required Skills:

We utilize a wide range of tools, languages, and frameworks. While we do not expect you to be familiar with all of them, experience or exposure to some of the following will enhance your success in our team:

  1. Extensive experience with large-scale distributed systems and the ability to operate in a multi-platform environment.
  2. Expertise in automation and software architecture design within the banking sector.
  3. Experience in developing 3-tier applications both on-premises and in the cloud, including:
    1. Frontend: React or Angular.
    2. Backend: .Net Core (C#) or Java.
    3. Database: SQL and NoSQL experience.
  4. Design and implementation of microservices and highly scalable APIs.
  5. Proficiency in scripting/programming languages (JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Python).
  6. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus).
  7. Experience with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, along with relevant certifications.
  8. Solution and system design expertise.
  9. Knowledge of application security and observability.
  10. Commitment to code quality control through peer programming, code reviews, and automated pipeline management.
  11. Experience working on greenfield projects is highly valued.
