Job Summary

The Locomotive Service Officer is a critical role responsible for providing expert guidance and support to Locomotive Engineers, Student Locomotive Engineers, and Conductor Locomotive Operators on locomotive operations, train handling, and general locomotive engineer responsibilities. This position requires a strong understanding of railway operations, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Main Responsibilities

Training and Development

• Provide comprehensive training to Locomotive Engineers, Student Locomotive Engineers, and Conductor Locomotive Operators on locomotive operations, train handling, and general locomotive engineer responsibilities.

• Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of locomotive engineers, including simulator training and on-the-job training.

• Collaborate with Divisional Officers to identify training needs and develop training plans to address those needs.

Locomotive Event Recorder Analysis

• Analyze and interpret LER data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement in locomotive operations and train handling.

• Develop and implement strategies to improve locomotive performance, reduce accidents and incidents, and enhance overall safety.

• Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance teams to identify and address issues related to locomotive performance and safety.

Guidance and Support

• Provide expert guidance and support to Divisional Officers, Trainmasters, and other stakeholders on locomotive operations, train handling, and general locomotive engineer responsibilities.

• Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance teams to develop and implement strategies to improve locomotive performance, reduce accidents and incidents, and enhance overall safety.

• Participate in safety blitzes, walkabouts, and Health and Safety committee meetings to identify and address safety concerns.

Planning and Coordination

• Prioritize and plan ESO duties to ensure effective use of resources and minimize disruptions to locomotive operations.

• Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance teams to develop and implement strategies to improve locomotive performance, reduce accidents and incidents, and enhance overall safety.

• Maintain records and reports related to locomotive operations, train handling, and general locomotive engineer responsibilities.

Working Conditions

The role requires working in a fast-paced environment with irregular working hours, including on-call shifts. The incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and manage stress. Frequent travel within Canada and the United States is required, and a valid passport is necessary.

Requirements

Experience

• Between 3 to 5 years of service as a qualified Locomotive Engineer.

Education/Certification/Designation

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Railway Employee Qualification Standards for Operating Crew Regulation (QSOC) and Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) qualification.

• Valid Driver's Licence.
