Job Overview: The Medical Billing Specialist plays a crucial role in the healthcare revenue cycle by ensuring accurate processing of patient billing data, submitting insurance claims, and facilitating prompt payment for services provided. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of medical billing practices, insurance protocols, and regulatory standards in Ontario. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to juggle multiple responsibilities effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Billing and Coding:
  • Precisely input patient billing details into the electronic health records (EHR) system.
  • Assign suitable medical codes (ICD-10, CPT) to diagnoses and procedures.
  • Examine and confirm patient information for completeness and accuracy.
  1. Insurance Claims Management:
  • File insurance claims with relevant payers, including provincial health insurance and private insurers.
  • Monitor unpaid or denied claims to ensure timely resolution.
  • Engage with insurance providers to clarify billing discrepancies and resolve issues.
  1. Payment Processing:
  • Record payments received from insurance companies and patients in the appropriate accounts.
  • Reconcile accounts to ensure accurate transaction documentation.
  • Prepare and dispatch patient invoices and statements.
  1. Compliance and Documentation:
  • Adhere to healthcare regulations, including privacy and confidentiality standards.
  • Stay informed about changes in billing regulations and insurance policies.
  • Ensure thorough and accurate documentation of billing activities.
  1. Reporting and Analysis:
  • Generate billing and financial reports for management assessment.
  • Analyze billing data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Offer recommendations for enhancing billing processes.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or certificate in medical billing, health administration, or a related field.
  • Completion of a Medical Terminology course is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in medical billing or a similar role in Ontario.
  • Relevant healthcare and/or registration experience is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with medical coding systems (ICD-10, CPT) and billing software.
  • Knowledge of provincial health insurance billing procedures and guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR systems.
  • Experience with electronic medical records systems is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
