Job Overview

The Risk Management function in Canada provides independent oversight of risk-taking and mitigation activities across our Canadian Segment businesses. This role involves the identification, assessment, measurement, monitoring, and reporting of current and emerging risk factors affecting our operations in Canada. The Risk Management team ensures that risk considerations are integrated into all areas and processes, from product development to frontline business objectives.

The Head of Risk Management is accountable for the comprehensive identification, assessment, measurement, monitoring, and reporting of risk management within our Group Benefits sector. This role requires close collaboration with various teams to ensure that risks impacting the business are effectively identified, assessed, managed, and communicated to leadership. A key responsibility is to enhance the risk culture and align risk appetite within the business and Canadian Segment.

This position plays a vital role in the daily execution and oversight of our operational risk framework. By working closely with the leadership team, the role ensures compliance with the company's risk management requirements and related policies. Please note that this job description does not encompass all duties required of the employee in this role, and responsibilities may change as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Foster a culture of integrity and risk awareness, enabling Group Benefits to balance risk levels with customer, regulatory, and shareholder obligations while achieving sustainable performance.
  • Ensure alignment of business strategies with the Company's strategic risk objectives, continuously driving risk management processes towards best practices.
  • Maintain processes for identifying, assessing, measuring, monitoring, and reporting principal risks within the business unit.
  • Independently oversee the design and execution of risk management strategies and initiatives.
  • Review risk assessments to ensure comprehensive consideration of business practices in alignment with overall risk programs, effectively communicating results to various audiences.
  • Provide oversight for operational risk and business resilience, ensuring alignment with established governance processes and policies.
  • Manage the change process within Group Benefits to ensure effective risk mitigation strategies for new or changing initiatives.
  • Engage subject matter experts to address specific risks, collaborating with the business to resolve issues adequately.
  • Report and escalate key risk exposures or issues that threaten business objectives to senior management, ensuring appropriate mitigating actions are taken.
  • Oversee investigations into significant errors or incidents, participate in response planning, communicate root causes, advocate for process improvements, and ensure corrective action plans are executed.
  • Provide thought leadership on evolving risks and related mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate with other Segment and Global Risk Management teams to ensure consistent interpretation and application of risk policies.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in financial services or risk management, preferably in insurance.
  • Experience in Operational or Enterprise Risk Management is preferred.
  • Demonstrated impact and influence, along with change management capabilities.
  • Strong strategic, critical, and analytical thinking skills, with effective problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently; decisive and results-oriented.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex issues clearly to both technical and business audiences.
  • Ability to identify and articulate risks and their impact on the business.
  • Strong prioritization skills within the context of overall strategic goals.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, fostering relationships in a matrixed, geographically dispersed organization.
